Huckster, by Gene Albamonte

Copywriter and writer-writer Gene Albamonte has published a new book, Huckster: An Unnecessary Collection Of Essays On The Advertising Industry. (Gene was nice enough to send MC a copy, thanks man!) Whenever MC sees a real deal book with a copywriter’s name on the spine, there’s always this twinge of jealousy, like “Wow. He did it. I can do it, too!” Then MC starts reading the book and thinks, “Wow, this is a lot of work. Look at all of those words.” Much respect, Mr. Albamonte. Hilarious book. At times, painfully hilarious. But that’s how we like it.

Exhibit: ADdendum101

Dennis Lee, art director/ACD at Wongdoody, checks in with a new blog called ADdendum 101, featuring lessons and advice about the ad industry for recent grads. Some good stuff for those of us who aren’t so recent, too.

Exhibit: Breaking In

TBWA copywriter William Burks Spencer has just finished a new book that makes MC positively giddy. “Breaking In: Over 100 advertising insiders reveal how to build a portfolio that will get you hired.” And who doesn’t want to get hired? Great idea, Mr. Spencer. Loves it.

Exhibit: Halcyon Days

Every so often, MC gets an email asking if we know of an equivalent site for art directors. To which we reply, “Aren’t ALL other sites for art directors and designers?” Yes, well. Here’s a little blog you might not know about but should. It’s actually not-so-little anymore, thanks to features in the SF Chronicle and 7×7 Magazine. It’s a design blog (and then some), written and curated by architect/designer/illustrator Kelly Waters. For writers, it’s an idea garden. Plant yourself. Watch them grow.

Exhibit: Gimpressionism

Peanut butter and jelly. Puppies and babies. Whiskey and bottom desk drawers. And now, San Francisco copywriter Chris Elzinga has taken it upon himself to combine two more things that are made for each other: impressionist paintings and gimps. This is real. These paintings are selling.
