Nick Rudie

Nick is a freelance copywriter/CD in Minneapolis. Lots of inspiring lifestyle and outdoor projects on his site for brands like Supra Boats, Jack Link’s, CLIF Bar, Moomba Boats, Polaris, Catch Co., and Bauer Hockey (above). Makes MC want to get out there this weekend and do something active. Or, write a campaign about other people getting out there and doing something active. (Hmm.) Dig it!

Cole Thompson

Cole is a copywriter/GCD at Flint Group of Agencies in Minneapolis. (He was also a student of MC’s back in the day. MC takes full credit for all of Cole’s success since. Kidding!) He’s got a new site up with a bunch of cool work including projects for Bobcat, Flint, Mortarr, Pioneer, some old ad school stuff (fun to see again), and a special “headlines only” page. Dig it.

Tanner Uselmann

Tanner is a senior copywriter at FCB Chicago. His site was submitted to MC by Joey Johnson, a senior copywriter at DDB Chicago (love it). Tanner’s site is an eclectic mix of Ace Bandages (above), Naughty Cookies, Donated Toilet Paper, Feelings, Found Love, and other stuff you can see for yourself. Plus stuff you can hear for yourself—like his former band, Candid Kid. Now that’s good times.

Eric Hansen

Eric is a senior copywriter/ACD at Colle McVoy in Minneapolis. All kinds of awesome projects on his site for Jackson Hole, Red Barron, Jack’s Links, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Schell’s Beer (above). Lots of really great headlines, too. (Can’t be a copywriter in Minneapolis for long without being able to write great headlines.) Got to like that.

Brainco Copywriter Grads

brainco2

Brainco is a cool little ad school in Hopkins, MN, just outside of Minneapolis. (MC taught a few classes there back in the day.) Honored to wrap up graduation season with eight Brainco copywriter portfolios. Can’t wait to see where they land!

Senior CW Wanted: Target, Minneapolis

target

Steve Chirhart, copywriter/ACD at Target in Minneapolis (and good friend to MC), is on the hunt for a great writer to join the Target Creative team. From Steve: “Do you spend more time than you want to admit on social? Do you put the big idea before a bunch of plain old pretty words? Are you ready to make heads turn, break some glass (figuratively) and create headline-grabbing work? If yes, then just a heads up: We’re looking for someone who can take strategy and spin it into something shareable. Someone who has a sharp eye (and ear) for killer writing, but can push below the surface. Someone who can collaborate with a bunch of go-getters, what if-ers and socially savvy makers willing to break the rules and shake up the norm to make cool things happen. A sense of humor, the ability to keep it light and carefree is key. Above all else, you’ll get to help shape one of the world’s strongest social brands and work with one of the best teams in the business.

Interested? Below are just a few examples of projects you’d be working on at any given moment. Really interested? Let Steve.Chirhart@Target.com know.”

Jim Moen

bathebrew

In addition to being a senior copywriter at The Lacek Group in Minneapolis, Jim and his sister Katie Moen write jokes for 30 Watt Inc. “They aim to bring comedy to the masses through merchandise in stores like Target, Urban Outfitters, Bed, Bath & Beyond and more.” For example, the Bathe & Brew (above). At the very top of MC’s holiday list this year.

Tim Gillingham

toast

Tim is a freelance copywriter/CD in Minneapolis. Over the past 20 years, he’s worked at shops like Fallon, Carmichael, Arnold, Burnett, and Saatchi (geez), on more awesome accounts than MC can list here. Don’t miss his classic campaigns for Citi Simplicity Card and the VW Beetle, including the above spot “Squares.” Brilliant.

UPDATE: Phil Calvit

chop

Phil is a full-time freelance copywriter in Minneapolis. Since his last post on MC (03.10.14), he’s  added new work to his site and some new shops to his already stupid experience list. From Phil: “There’s no getting around it: I’ve been writing ads and ad-like things for a really long goddamn time. Since 1986, I’ve created stuff for pretty much every conceivable industry, in pretty much every conceivable medium—at, I would contend, a pretty consistently high level. And to think that this kind of experience, and this level of wordsmithing, are available on a freelance basis to one and all…the mind reels.”

Phil Calvit

united

Phil is a freelance copywriter in Minneapolis. Over the past 20+ years he’s spent time at just about every great shop in Minneapolis, including Barrie D’Rozario Murphy, Carmichael Lynch, Fallon, Hill Holiday, and Leonard Monahan Lubars. He’s also written a bunch of work that makes MC flat-out jealous, like the above spot for United, with VO by Robert Redford. Geez.

Connor Champley

Screen-Shot-2013-12-11-at-7.32.06-AM

Connor is a copywriter at LESS Co. in Minneapolis. Before that, he was a copywriter / digital strategist / community manager for Totino’s at General Mills, including Pizza Rolls. (Funny banner headline from Connor’s site: “Pizza Rolls. Because, Pizza Rolls.” Yes.) There is no more perfectly delicious / perfectly bad for you food product than Totino’s Pizza Rolls. How did Connor survive working on the account?!?!

Leah Metz

Leah is a copywriter in Minneapolis. Check out her “shaving for good” campaign for The Bridging Barber. When did grooming for charity officially become a thing? Movember started in 2004, was it then? Don’t know, but MC respects macho, pruning and positivity, so it’s all love.

Andy Thieman

Andy is a copywriter/creative manager at Target in Minneapolis, a cyclist, and a good friend of MC. (That’s him above left, with designer Jason Miller on the right.) Andy discovered he had testicular cancer on Christmas Eve. He started treatment on Monday. His blog BLOOD SWEAT CHEMO “exists to expose the daily grind behind four cycles of chemo.” Check it out. Get inspired. Give a little if you feel like it.

Paula Maki Biondich

Paula is a copywriter/CD at mono in Minneapolis, Fallon before that. She gets co-writing credit, along with Tom Sebanc, for the Holiday Inn campaign I mentioned in yesterday’s post. Just hilarious. The rest of her site is a gold mine: Blu Dot, Harvard, Sesame Street, so smart. But you absolutely have to read the print campaign for Kool-Aid (above). Pee-your-pants writing.

Tim Blevins

Tim is a senior copywriter at Carmichael Lynch, Colle+McVoy before that. His site is on Behance.net, which you should check out if you haven’t. (Think Facebook, but for creative portfolios.) His stuff rocks. YearbookYourself.com, PaintThatShitGold.com, Winnebago … it’s all good. NOTE: Also worth checking out but not yet up on Tim’s site are MillionBabyCrawl.com and LivingSasquatch.com
